Recognition and treatment of serotonin syndrome.
نویسنده
چکیده
Serotonin syndrome is an increasingly common adverse drug reaction, which can be life-threatening.1 Despite the common use of medications with direct or indirect serotonergic effects, many physicians are not aware of the presentation and management of serotonin excess.2 This is particularly true of less severe presentations of serotonin syndrome, which still contribute to patient morbidity.3 Family physicians need to be more aware of serotonin syndrome. This case report explains the syndrome’s pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management. Physicians are encouraged to consider the possibility of serotonin syndrome in patients who use serotonergic medications and present with autonomic changes, mental status changes, and neurological hyperexcitability.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most popular psychiatric medications that are approved for several neuropsychiatric conditions such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). On the other hand, clomipramine is a tricyclic anti-depressant which is the only approved medication, among this class, to treat OCD due to its substantial effects on serotonergic sys...
متن کاملRegulation of Appetite: Role of Serotonin and Hypothalamus
Serotonin (5-HT), a mono-aminergic neurotransmitter is biochemically derived from tryptophan and is mainly found in gastrointestinal tract, platelets and central nervous system of animals. Serotonin (5-HT) in coordination with hypothalamus plays an important role in the CNS control of appetite, eating behavior, and energy balance and body weight. It has a special role in control of carbohydrate...
متن کاملSerotonin syndrome due to an overdose of moclobemide?
Serotonin syndrome, a triad of autonomic instability, altered mental status and neuromuscular abnormalities, is usually attributed to serotonergic overdoses. Moclobemide is a new selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that generally causes mild, self-limited gastrointestinal and central nervous system effects after ingestion. We present a case of serotonin syndrome that occurred after moc...
متن کاملThe role of spinal serotonergic system in morphine withdrawal syndrome in the rat
Previous pharmacological studies have implicated serotonergic brain systems in opiate withdrawal syndrome. Increased brain 5-HT release is associated with the development of physical dependence to morphine. Specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluvoxamine and sertraline reduce the severity of naloxone precipitated opioid withdrawal syndrome. Other studies have shown that 5-HT system ...
